Celebrating its 60th anniversary, Afc Leopards, the oldest club in Kenya, garnered attention across social media platforms.

The occasion saw the club engaging in customary solicitation efforts, including visits to prominent offices, notably the Office of the President. Generous contributions were reportedly extended, with President William Ruto reportedly donating Ksh. 10 million.

In an effort to mark the milestone, Afc Leopards organized various events, including a high-profile friendly match against a Spanish club—an entity unfamiliar to even fervent followers of European leagues like myself. This choice prompts reflection on the potential financial benefits derived from such engagements. One might reasonably suggest exploring partnerships with neighbouring clubs like Yanga or Simba of Tanzania Who are doing so well in Continental football & well versed with such celebrations (Simba or Yanga day annual festivals) & attracts admiration from regional football enthusiasts or even venturing further to engage teams such as TP Mazembe of DRC or Mighty Mamelodi Sundowns, known for their significant crowd-drawing capabilities and potential for jersey sales, thus capitalizing on fundamental marketing principles.

Furthermore, the celebration at Nyayo Stadium featured a myriad of football activities, encompassing women’s football, encounters with legends, matches against community-based clubs such as Gor Mahia and Shabana, culminating in the main event: Afc Leopards versus A.E Ramassa.

Dignitaries including top National Leadership, Politicians, and the Nairobi Governor graced the occasion, ostensibly for PR purposes and to fulfill political agendas.

As the 60th anniversary festivities conclude, attention turns to the tangible outcomes of this celebration: the sale of merchandise, potential corporate partnerships forged, and the recruitment of new members, if indeed a recruitment drive was undertaken. Additionally, scrutiny is warranted regarding the financial implications of hosting A.E Ramassa in comparison to associated expenses.

This introspection underscores the significance of setting a positive precedent as the oldest club in Kenya, with hope that future celebrations, including our beloved Gor mahia’s own 60th birthday in 2028, may glean valuable insights from Afc Leopards’ experience.
