21x Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia secures their place in the next round of the CAF Champions League preliminary matches on Sunday 15th September 2024 with an impressive 5 -1 win over South Sudan’s El Merreikh Bentiu.
After losing 1-0 in the away first leg game, Gor Mahia needed to make a comeback at home ground Nyayo National Stadium, and they did so in style, defeating the visitors 5-1 to set another exciting clash against Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC.
The match attended by Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Club patron Raila Odinga, former ICT CS Eliud Owalo among other leaders, began on a shaky note for Gor Mahia. In the 8th minute, El Merreikh Bentiu’s Samuel Akinbinu scored the opening goal, putting the Kenyan champions in a difficult position.
However, Gor Mahia responded swiftly, with Chris Ochieng equalizing just three minutes later. From then on, it was a goal fest for Gor Mahia. Alpha Onyango and Alphonse Omija added two more goals, giving Gor Mahia a 3-1 lead by halftime.
Rooney Onyango then sealed the sweet victory with a brace in the second half , securing a 5-2 aggregate win for the record Kenyan champions.
Gor Mahia will now face Egyptian giants and record African champions Al Ahly SC in the next round, in what promises to be a stern test of their mettle under new Brazilian tactician Leonardo Martins Neiva.
