Striker Benson Omalla scored a brace as champions Gor Mahia beat rivals AFC Leopards 2-0 in the 97th Mashemeji derby at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Saturday. Omalla scored the opener on 22 minutes after capitalizing on a goalkeeping error from Levis Opiyo, before adding a second in the 56th minute to send the Green Army, that included club patron Raila Odinga, who was also in the stands, into a frenzy. Omalla nearly notched a hattrick but his rasping shot from the edge of the box was punched away by Opiyo. The win moves Gor to second place on 12 points, four adrift of leaders Posta Rangers. Gor Mahia’s head coach, Johnathan McKinstry expressed his gratitude to the fans for their overwhelming support during the Derby match -“Thank you to all the fans who came out in their thousands on Saturday for the #MashemejiDerby. Your support drives players and staff forward, and we are pleased to be able to give you a result to celebrate. See you all again in 2 weeks vs. Tusker FC,” McKinstry stated.
